Malcolm is 84

El Hajj Malik El Shabazz would have been eighty-four years old today had he lived to the luxury of a ripe old age surrounded by his wife, daughters, grandchildren and followers. It’s too expedient to linger over his years with the Nation of Islam, or about the circumstances of his death, and not to think about what made him ultimately leave the Nation, and to articulate and to revise his own vision for black people. A vision that included alliances with other people of color, with conscious whites, and perhaps, could have included gays. What might have been, indeed. And what must we do, as individuals, to carry out his dream as well.
