Obama Nominates Sonia from the Bronx

Hers was the name that popped up most often to succeed Justice David Souter, so I figured that it was a go unless she didn’t want it or couldn’t take the heat. She wanted it and we’re going to get her: The Honorable Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the New York Federal Circuit Court. We won’t get her, of course, without putting up our dukes. The haters are already after her.

The Hill published the barking mad Republican National Committee talking points that they accidentally let slip this p.m. Check them out folks, spread them around, and remember that when you are watching or hearing titular head of the GOP Rush (who blurted that she was a racist–well, it takes one to know one, right?) or Rove or Malkin, or worse, Beck or Savage or any of the other haters talk about Madame Nominee, remember that they don’t want to give her a chance. Booky over at JJP had a blow-by-blow interpretation of some of those talking points, to wit:

o President Obama’s nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court is an important decision that will have an impact on the United States long after his administration.

Translation; Forget about the impact of Clarence Thomas, Anthony Scalia, John Roberts and Samuel Alito will have on the United States long after Pappy Bush’s and Juniors’ mis-administrations.

o Republicans are committed to a fair confirmation process and will reserve judgment until more is known about Judge Sotomayor’s legal views, judicial record and qualifications.

Translation: Republicans are committed to payback and don’t really care about Judge Sotomayor’s legal views, judicial record and qualifications. She is a liberal appointed by a liberal, that’s all we need to know.

o To be clear, Republicans do not view this nomination without concern. Judge Sotomayor has received praise and high ratings from liberal special interest groups. Judge Sotomayor has also said that policy is made on the U.S. Court of Appeals.

Translation: To be clear, Republicans are skeered sh#tless about this nomination because of her high ratings from liberal special interest groups (aka, the little people).

o The confirmation process will help Republicans, and all Americans, understand more about judge Sotomayor’s thoughts on the importance of the Supreme Court’s fidelity to the Constitution and the rule of law.

Translation; The confirmation process will help all Americans understand that Republicans care more about obstructing President Obama than they do fidelity to the Constitution and the rule of law.

o Republicans look forward to learning more about Judge Sotomayor’s legal views and to determining whether her views reflect the values of mainstream America.

Translation: Republicans look forward to bashing and smearing Judge Sotomayor’s legal views and distorting her record.

I don’t need to talk about how good the girl is. Princeton? Sheesh. She is more than good. She had to be. And she made it. She’s also the first to admit that her mama is more woman than she is. Sonia from the Bronx.

One down (Prop. 8), but one up. I know that this is a great day for my Latina sister-in-law, and my black Latina nieces. We can all be family on days like this, and not just on holidays and visits.
