Sister of Slain QB’s Lover Talks About Sahel Kazemi

Sahel Kazemi, the young lover suspected of slaying ex-QB Steve McNair and then killing herself, was Iranian. Her sister, Soheyla, said to the Jacksonville, Florida Times-Union that “her sister expected McNair to leave his wife in the next two or three weeks and eventually marry her.” Soheyla, who raised her sister and refers to her as her daughter, cannot believe that Sahel committed murder-suicide.

Soheyla said she chatted with Sahel several times a day through Facebook. She said her sister began dating the married ex-football player about five months ago and was in love with him.

They met at Dave & Busters, where Sahel worked as a waitress for about two years.

Soheyla said she was worried about the age difference between the two but “she never listened to nobody.”

Soheyla said she met McNair a month ago when she traveled to Nashville for Sahel’s 20th birthday party.

“He was nice,” she said. “He did everything for my daughter.”

Soheyla said Sahel had a sad childhood but in recent months “had never been happier.” Two weeks ago, the 20-year-old flew to Las Vegas to meet McNair but McNair never arrived, Soheyla said. According to the Tennessean, McNair had recently purchased a Cadillac Escalade for Sahel. The two were pulled over just two days before their deaths. She was arrested for driving under the influence and refusing to take a breath test. She told police she was not drunk, but high.

Soheyla said she learned about the deaths Saturday when checking her Yahoo mail. The report stated he was with an unidentified woman, and she immediately knew it was her sister. She was soon was contacted by police.

“Why? Why?” she asked. “She was too young.”

And that’s probably why Steve McNair was attracted to her as well. She was young. She wasn’t stupid, but she was young. Oh, I believe he was in love with her in his own way, but it wasn’t enough to leave his wife. He was playing with her. A young woman from a Muslim country with an unhappy childhood and absent parents wanting to be loved for herself.

The Associated Press had another, darker sidebar to the story:

Steve McNair’s 20-year-old girlfriend bought a gun a couple of days before she was found dead alongside the slain former NFL quarterback, her relative said Monday.

Farzin Abdi said police told him about the gun purchase by his aunt Sahel Kazemi, who was raised with him like a sister. Kazemi and McNair were found dead on Saturday in a Nashville condominium leased by the former Titans star.

Abdi said police told him they are almost sure Kazemi was the shooter, but the 27-year-old nephew said he doesn’t believe she would do it. Abdi didn’t know what day of the week the gun was purchased or what type of gun it was.

“There was no way she was depressed and wanting to do this,” he said. “She was so happy. … She just had it made, you know, (with) this guy taking care of everything.”

Nashville police didn’t immediately have a response to Abdi’s comments.

Abdi said Kazemi believed McNair was divorcing his wife and she was preparing to sell her furniture to move in with him.

Nashville courts had no record of a McNair divorce case, but a 14,000-square-foot home he owned in Nashville is on the market for $3 million.

His wife, Mechelle, is still distraught over the killing. I’m sure the woman is under heavy sedation right now. His agent didn’t even have a clue about the affair.

[McNair] endeared himself further with his charity work. Not just from the checks he handed out, but for throwing himself into the efforts, like he did when loading boxes onto tractor-trailers bound for Hurricane Katrina victims.

Publicly, McNair was a happily married man and proud father of four sons who split his time between his Mississippi farm and a home in Music City, where celebrities are cherished, not hassled.

His death, however, thrust a darker side of his private life into the spotlight.

McNair also had a problem with alcohol. However, this should not detract from why he sought and had a relationship with Sahel Kazemi. Mid-life crisis, wanting to feel in control of his life, unhappiness with being retired from the game, unhappiness in his marriage are all reasons why that should have been part of him going to a shrink or marriage counselor or two.

Steve McNair was more than just a victim, a father and a husband, who devoted his time to charities.

He was a rat.
