“Away We Go”: This is One Movie I Want to See

Okay.

Oldies: Forget that this is little Maya from the song, “Loving You,” made famous by the late, lovely Minnie Riperton. Newbies: Forget that this is Maya Rudolph from SNL, who can play black, white, Latina or Asian.

This is Maya Rudolph playing Verona De Tessant, preggers with her boyfriend, John Krasinski, who plays Burt Farlander. You could say that they’re on a mission of sorts: they’re traveling across the country–and Canada–in search of the perfect place in which to raise their family. Along the way, however, they find out how NOT to raise their children, and what the meaning of home is for them.

Anyway, this minute-long excerpt hints, ever so gently, at Verona’s roots, and whether she made the right decision to be with Burt. Not that I had any doubts…

The film also stars Allison Janney, Catherine O’Hara, Jeff Daniels, Paul Schneider, Carmen Ejogo, Chris Messina, Melanie Lynskey, Josh Hamilton, Jim Gaffigan and Maggie Gyllenhaal. It was written by the husband and wife team of Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida. If Eggers’ name sounds familiar to some of you–yes, he is the editor and publisher of McSweeney’s, and is a novelist in his own right.

Yep, it’s playing over at the 608 Sundance, where I live. Find out where it is and go see it for yourselves. The buzz about this little film has been nothing less than overwhelmingly positive. Don’t be surprised if Maya and/or the film and its screenwriters get an Oscar nomination.

And wouldn’t Minnie have been pleased?
