Justice Sonia Sotomayor is Wasting No Time on the Bench; Asked Far More Questions Than Unca Thomas Has in Years

And it doesn’t sit too well with Justice Scalia that she asked six more questions than he did in one hour. Guess what, guys? She ain’t playin’. HuffPo took it from several sources, including AP and WaPo:

The Supreme Court began its new term Monday by indicating a willingness to limit how long a suspect’s request for a lawyer should remain valid, and new Justice Sonia Sotomayor wasted little time in letting her voice be heard by questioning the lawyers.

Just how vocal was Sotomayor on the Monday? According to McClatchy she managed to ask more questions in an hour than the extremely taciturn Clarence Thomas has asked “over the course of several years.”

The Washington Post also commented on Sotomayor’s confident performance in its review of Monday’s session:

Sotomayor displayed no reticence on the first day of her first term on the court; in the two cases on the docket, she asked as many questions and made as many comments as Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. The only sign of her newness was that she at times forgot to turn on her microphone before posing a question.

That’s okay. They heard her.

It’s been about three years and 144 cases since Clarence Thomas opened his mouth, if you’d like a count.

It must be refreshing (and disconcerting to some) to see a new Justice getting her hands deep in it, and not be overawed by her surroundings.

The Los Angeles Times hinted that a rivalry might be shaping up between Sotomayor and Justice Scalia that might show the two justices publicly tilting. Hell, bring it on. David Savage wrote: “Scalia has been the court’s most outspoken conservative for more than 20 years, and Sotomayor had shown herself to be strong and assertive as a judge on the U.S. appeals court in Manhattan.”

We’ll see what develops, shall we?
