Dana Carvey Resurrects The Church Lady Guest Hosting SNL, Saturday, February 5, 2011
Dana Carvey looks a little jowly now, but he essentially looks the same. His voice, which has understandably aged a little over 25 years, has gotten deeper. As a result, that memorable high voice The Church Lady possessed went in and out of character. Looks like s/he needed some more rehearsal. The Church Lady had as guests the Kardashian sisters (Nasim Pedrad, Vanessa Bayer and Abby Elliot), Snooki (Bobby Moynihan), and lastly, musical guest Justin Bieber, all of 16, and seemingly just too pure and clean cut for school.
Apparently Bieber got the Church Lady’s panties in a twist, “with his angel voice.” “Jesus” had to get on the line before she got some of that “sweet Bieber.” Sweet Bieber, of course, sounds a lot like “sweet beaver.” At that, I felt a bit grossed out, despite Bieber swishing his trademark bowl cut for laughs, as the Jesus voice intones that Bieber is one of his finest creations. I can get the joke, but after all this recent stuff about young men being sexually importuned or abused by both men and women, somehow it just didn’t feel right. Said HuffPo:
The pint-sized singer incited quite a surprising reaction from the Church Lady. Let’s just say she takes a liking to his “nice new haircut,” “million dollar smile” and “voice that makes young ladies’ naughty parts tingle.”
And even older women’s naughty parts, it appears. But not this one’s. Bieber’s okay as the latest girl crush and he is very Christian, and his 15 minutes are not yet up. It remains to be seen whether he’ll be able to successfully refashion his image through the ups and downs, if he wants to make this a career.
Anyway, it was good to see Dana Carvey again. (He also had a “Wayne’s World” reunion with Mike Myers at top of this episode.) Nothing like flashbacks like “Church Chat.”
