The Ancestors Have Taken Whitney Houston, 48 (w/Update)
UPDATE (2/11/12, 10:37 p.m.):
Before I hit the sack, there is more from TMZ and other sources:
Whitney’s mother, Cissy Houston, spoke with her daughter 25-30 minutes before she died and nothing seemed unusual … sources tell TMZ. We’re told they talked about attending the Clive Davis pre-Grammy party.
Dionne Warwick, Whitney’s cousin, called as well … several hours before Whitney died … to make sure they were sitting at the same table at Clive’s party. And again … there were no signs of trouble.
The people in touch with Dionne say she is inconsolable adding, “She is an absolute mess.”
As for Cissy, we’re told she is “hysterical.”
I feel for Dionne and Cissy, truly. But are they whitewashing what was really going on with Whitney?
So far, the Beverly Hills PD has said that there was no obvious foul play—meaning, there was no evidence of other people with an agenda in the room—involved. It could be that Whitney died of natural causes, but I know that room was combed for clues and evidence (some reports now claim that it has been sealed). It could be two things: an OD or her body simply gave out from all the abuse she visited on herself. Why? There is also a family history of early death, it turns out.
The visibly bloated singer displayed erratic behavior throughout the afternoon — flailing her hands frenetically as she spoke to Brandy and Monica, skipping around the ballroom in a child-like fashion and wandering aimlessly about the lobby. It was mentioned by a Grammy staffer that security personnel received calls of the singer doing handstands by the pool.
After leaving rehearsals, Houston returned to the ballroom — with her teenage daughter Bobbi Kristina in tow — as camera crews set up for interviews. The singer smelled of alcohol and cigarettes. A Grammy staffer said that during the interviews with Brandy, Monica and Clive, Houston was dancing just off camera to make the singers and Davis laugh. Grammy personnel expressed concern that she’d be caught on camera, and that reporters would write about her behavior.
Finally her daughter pulled Houston out of the room, and the singer skipped off. In our post of the event, we called Houston’s behavior “loose and lively.”
UPDATE (2/11/12, 9:27 p.m.):
As always, TMZ.com is on the case. As I am on Central Time, Pacific Time is two hours behind me. So by the time we all received the news of her death, it was all over, and poor Whitney was probably already in the morgue. Earlier, but erroneous reports had it that Ray Norwood had found her in her hotel room.
Our sources tell us a member of Whitney’s entourage found her in her room at the Beverly Hilton hotel … and called hotel security — who then dialed 911. When paramedics arrived Houston was found unresponsive.
We’re told police arrived to the scene within minutes and fire was already there on an unrelated call. According to our sources, paramedics performed CPR but it did not work and she was pronounced dead at 3:55 PM.
Our sources say there were no obvious signs of foul play, but BH PD detectives have begun a full investigation. We’re told she was ID’ed by family and friends.
No doubt, more news as it develops.Vodpod videos no longer available.
I am in shock. I am just shaking my head every few minutes…at the sheer waste of such a talented and beautiful black woman’s life.
More information will be forthcoming. This is indeed a shock, as it had been announced that she was making another comeback album and would be appearing in a film, a remake of the Seventies hit film, Sparkle, this year. There had been a rumor floating about last week that Whitney was broke and on her last few dollars.
They also reported that Whitney had an on-off relationship with Ray J, Brandy Norwood‘s brother.
I always wished Whitney well, strong, and drug-free, and on the positive side of life. I think millions of others felt the same way.
And she was a queen, although Nekesa Mumbi Moody of the Associated Press wasn’t giving her any slack:
Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear.
At her peak in the 1980s and ’90s, Houston was the golden girl of the music industry and one of the world’s top-selling artists.
Her success carried her beyond music to movies such as “The Bodyguard.”
But by the end of her career, her record sales plummeted and her voice became raspy and hoarse.
At one point, Whitney was looked on as a natural successor to Aretha Franklin voice-wise.
She is immediately survived by her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, and her ex-husband, Bobby Brown.
All I can think of is her lovely face and form in The Bodyguard.
There will be updates.
