Nancy Lanza, Deceased Mother of the Sandy Hook Killer, Was a “Prepper” and Taught Her Son to Shoot
This woman made a fatal error in judgment: she gave her son the means by which he could kill her and then blow away those poor children and their teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Apparently, investigators are also contesting whether Nancy Lanza was even a schoolteacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School, as initial reports had stated. They are trying to figure out what connection, if any, the woman and her son had to the school that would explain Adam Lanza’s murder rampage.
There may not be such a connection, but what has been revealed about Nancy Lanza since the shooting has made my relative sympathy turn into revulsion.
Nancy Lanza was a member of the survivalist movement and was a prepper, someone who was always in preparation for the demise of law and order that would ensue from the collapse of our government and of the economy. This involves stockpiling food, weapons, and learning methods by which an individual and/or his/her family would be able to survive any disaster or social or economic upheaval and live on their own.
Nancy Lanza taught her son Adam, who was already mentally disabled, how to shoot.
Nancy Lanza did not adquately secure her guns.
Nancy Lanza, whose gun collection was raided by her son Adam for Friday’s massacre at Sandy Hook school, was part of the “prepper” movement, which urges readiness for social chaos by hoarding supplies and training with weapons.
“She prepared for the worst,” her sister-in-law Marsha Lanza told reporters. “Last time we visited her in person, we talked about prepping – are you ready for what could happen down the line, when the economy collapses?”
It also emerged that Mrs Lanza had spoken of her fears less than a week before the attack that she was “losing” her son. “She said it was getting worse. She was having trouble reaching him,” said a friend of Mrs Lanza who did not want to be named.
Why in hell the media has to buttonhole possible witnesses at bars and taverns is beyond my comprehension. However, here is what an alleged drinking buddy of hers relayed about what Lanza said about her son.
In hindsight, the conversation last week over craft beers could not have been more foreboding, the friend said.
“It was weird. She never really talked about (Adam),” he said. “She mainly talked about her oldest kid (Ryan). I knew about the other one, but she never spoke much about him.
“She looked disturbed. She was looking down at her glass and kind of talking slowly,” he added.
Nancy’s morose disposition could not have been more was totally out of character.
“You have to know Nancy to know how weird that was,” he said. “She was just always so full of life.”
As she lamented her son’s deteriorating mental state, the drinking buddy took a phone call. When he started chatting with her again, the subject had changed and Nancy was acting her normal, happy self.
“She was a country girl” who loved to hunt with a falcon that would scare game she’d blast out of the sky, he said.
She had “at least a dozen” firearms — mainly larger rifles,” the friend added. He said he didn’t know anything about the pistols.
“Adam learned how to shoot a rifle by the time he was 9 years old,” said the friend, who added that he never met the disturbed kid. “They would go to the range.”
But she was no reckless gun nut.
“Nancy was a responsible gun owner,” the friend said. “It was important that she teach her son how to responsibly use a firearm.”
My common sense would tell me NOT to teach a mentally-disturbed or -disabled child or young adult how to shoot a gun. My common sense tells me that Nancy Lanza was irresponsible in this respect, no matter how good a parent she was, and I would feel that way even if this horror had not occurred. There are other ways in which you can teach a child responsibility and self-reliance. And if she was having problems reaching the boy, did she ever consider getting assistance from mental health resources—such as they are—outside her community, rather than talk over her fears and problems with individuals at a bar?
It does not even appear that Adam Lanza was adequately diagnosed, although it was said that he did take medication for his condition, which has been variously described as a form of Asperger’s. No, there was something else wrong with the boy. He may have started out with this syndrome, but he may have developed other problems as he began to mature. I have found that most who suffer from Asperger’s are rather meek. If anything, to say that Adam Lanza had this malady is to give those with Asperger’s a bad name.
I don’t even want to discuss survivalist groups or gun enthusiasts at this point, because I am already prejudiced against them. To me, they have given up being citizens. They’re part of the problem of guns, and they may have possibly have fueled elements of the Tea Party. In other words, I think that many are extremists.
Like I said before, the great evil did not come from outside of this community, but came from within. There’s no hiding place down here.
